Getting Started

Your first fifteen minutes

No account to create yet. No software to install. Read this, try one thing, and stop. That is a complete and successful first session.

  1. Open one assistant

Pick any of these. They all do the same thing, and you can change your mind later. If you have no preference, start with the first one.

    • Claude Patient, and good at explaining things simply
    • ChatGPT The best known one
    • Copilot Already on most Windows computers
  2. Type an ordinary sentence

Not a command, not keywords. Write the way you would speak to a helpful person behind a desk. Any of these will do:

    • “Explain what a Roth conversion is, as if I have never heard of it.”
    • “I have chicken, rice and half a lemon. What can I make?”
    • “Write a short, warm birthday message for my granddaughter turning 12.”
    • “What questions should I ask before choosing a Medicare plan?”
  3. Push back on the answer

This is the part most people never try, and it is where the whole thing becomes useful. Reply with any of these and watch what happens:

    • “That was too long. Give me three sentences.”
    • “Explain it more simply.”
    • “I think that is wrong. Check it again.”
    • “Now say it as if you were talking to my husband, who hates jargon.”
  4. Stop there

Genuinely. You have now done the thing. Everything else on this site is detail, and the detail will still be here next week.

The things people actually worry about

Will I break something?

No. You are typing into a text box. There is no button that damages your computer, empties your bank account, or deletes your photographs. The worst outcome is a poor answer, and the fix for that is to ask again.

Is it listening to me all the time?

A smart speaker listens for its wake word and only sends anything after it hears one. A chatbot on a screen hears nothing at all unless you press the microphone. You can review and delete what has been recorded, and we show you where.

Do I have to pay?

Not to start. Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, and Perplexity all have free versions that are more than enough for months. Be careful only of the ones that quietly become a subscription — we flag those.

What if I ask something stupid?

There is no such thing here, and nothing is watching you be a beginner. It will answer the tenth version of your question as patiently as the first.

Am I too old for this?

The people who do best with these tools are the ones with the most life experience to bring to them — because the hard part was never the typing. It was knowing what is worth asking.
